Ted, Ted, Wherefore Art Thou, Ted?

While his home state was in a frozen crisis, senator Ted Cruz headed for the sun and warmth of Cancun. Big problem. Cruz has a face as recognizable as a dog turd on the livingroom carpet.

Photos that rapidly circulated on social media overnight showed a man who could be the senator at an airport and on an airplane. In some photos, a gray face mask was visible that appeared to be similar to one that Cruz was wearing at Biden’s inauguration.

According to the social media postings, Cruz appeared to be in the Houston airport, preparing to board a United Airlines flight from Houston to Fort Lauderdale with continuing service to Cancun.

While outrage at Cruz was mounting online, his former opponent, O’Rourke, highlighted his own efforts to assist Texans during the crisis.

“We made over 151,000 calls to senior citizens in Texas tonight,” O’Rourke said in a Wednesday night tweet. “One of our [volunteers] talked to a man stranded at home w/out power in Killeen, hadn’t eaten in 2 days, got him a ride to a warming center and a hot meal. Help us reach more people, join us tomorrow.”

Caught with his pants down, Cruz went into damage control. He was just trying to be a good father. His kids had the week off from school because of the deep freeze.

"Wanting to be a good dad,” Cruz said, he decided to fly “with them last night and am flying back this afternoon.”

Yeah, sure, Ted.

  4. From a comment in the Guardian..

Rick Perry, the former Texas governor who became Donald Trump’s energy secretary, has said that Texans would willingly endure longer periods of sub-freezing temperatures if it stymied Democrats’ energy policy and efforts to combat climate change.

“Texans would be without electricity for longer than three days to keep the federal government out of their business,” Perry was quoted saying in blog post published Wednesday on the website of Republican congressman Kevin McCarthy.

Proving once again that you can't fix stupid.

  5. Perry has to be one of the most profoundly obtuse politicians in the history of that bizarre state. I'll bet wherever he was when he penned that comment he was not short of power, water or heat.

  6. Cruz is a blatant liar and gives pols a bad name even when the others are bigger liars. Just look at the evidence from wifey's tweets inviting her buddies to escape to Cancun. Look at the changed booking from a Sunday return to Thursday night.

I just hope some of this sticks but with him evading reelection until 2024 he is safe.

    1. Cruz is the poster boy for US politics in the 21st century. Krugman touched on this in his column this morning, Texas, Land of Wind and Lies.

"...those peddling the lie know that they’re operating in a post-truth political landscape. When two-thirds of Republicans believe that Antifa was involved in the assault on the Capitol, selling the base a bogus narrative about the Texas electricity disaster is practically child’s play.

"And if you’re expecting any change in the policies that helped cause this disaster, don’t count on it — at least as long as Texas remains Republican. Given everything else we’ve seen, the best bet is that demonization of wind power, not a realistic understanding of what actually happened, will rule policy going forward."

Krugman was writing of the lies Texas politicians are spinning to divert attention from their disastrous failures during the deep freeze but the sentiment is equally true for Ted Cruz.

  7. GOP enablers really have been attacking people for even daring to suggest he had any power to do anything as a senator. What's ridiculous is AOC, from out of state, raised $2 million in two days from small dollar donors. What could have Cruz have done within state? He could have been working the phones, getting people connected with others ensuring that any and all problems would be either prevented or mitigated within a timely manner.

Hell, there was a twitter thread on how the Canadian/Quebec governments back in 1998 derailed a train to provide generation for a Quebec town to make sure no one froze to death unnecessarily.

Shit, people who don't believe government works will do anything to ensure it doesn't. Sacrifices for a free market, someone called this. People sacrificed for Katrina, Flint, Sandy, Covid-19 and now this. All sacrifices for the free market economy.

The only thing these neo-liberal/conservative politicians use the government for nowadays to ensure they and their crooked friends never have to face the consequences of their decisions. Same thing for the odious Cuomo in New York. Crooked, murderous bastards, the lot of them.

    1. Politics has embarked on a path that could end democracy, Troy, and we're watching it unfold. I have always considered the beating heart of a viable democracy to be the informed consent of the electorate. It is the voting public with an accurate grasp of the issues to be determined by the contest who can fairly and reliably choose those who will lead them.

Politics today seeks to thwart informed consent. It's what Krugman described today as a "post-truth political landscape." Eventually the public turn cynical, detach from government and then are easy prey for the first charismatic to come along.

How many of the current crop of politicians do you consider honest and credible? Imagine if we had a law that provided knowingly lying to defeat the free will of the electorate would be punished by permanent removal and banishment from all and any public office. Could you imagine what we'd be hearing in Question Period?
