What a Year

 

It's been a record-setting year in many places. 

Here in British Columbia we've had our hottest year ever recorded, our wettest year on record and, now, it looks like we'll put 2021 in the books as our coldest year.

It will also be the first full year under a pandemic. We might be in store for another.

Well, I'd better cut this short. I need to get some firewood in.

    We live in a desperate world often devoid of conscience.
    Whilst we cry the restrictive life of Covid , heat and floods many in this world actually suffer climate change with no hope in the future.
    FFS when my neighbours complain of the restrictions of winter travel whilst these poor buggers , https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/24/at-least-six-dead-after-third-migrant-boat-in-three-days-sinks-in-greek-waters, risk their lives to just survive I fear we are the pampered beyond the realities of the world.

      I share your sentiments, Trailblazer. We are undergoing change and it's not for the better. Instead of setting aside differences to unite behind a common cause, we're taking the reciprocal course of disunity, suspicion, even paranoia. It's bloody minded tribalism at its worst.

      Let's work for something better in 2022.

      And a Merry Christmas to you, NPoV. A Blue Christmas indeed. I had hoped to attend a Blue Christmas service this year in memory of my departed younger brother. I had hoped there would be a Sally Ann service but I found out after the fact that it was held at the local United Church on the afternoon of the 12th. As you probably know I'm quite secular but these non-denominational services for the bereaved do seem to help.

  If you're sitting at a table and there's a loaded pistol in front of you, do you pick it up and point it at your own head?  Probably not, unless something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. How would you feel if someone else was holding that pistol to your head? But there is a pistol pointed at our heads and, unless we do something about it, we're goners. It's not a Glock. It's fossil fuels and the industry is slowly squeezing the trigger. The Cognoscenti Syndrome

  There is a group of people I think of as the Cognoscenti, people who are well educated, very informed and of rapidly diminishing relevance. Their ranks include writers such as Chris Hedges and Glen Greenwald. These are people who have honed an almost Puritanical value system, readily finding fault in any direction. They are scathing in their attacks on Republicans and Democrats alike to the point where they become nihilists. They don't endorse. They prescribe. This is where they fail. They're unable to advocate for anything that might resonate with the public whose interests they argue are being trammeled. Donald Trump was bad but Joe Biden is scarcely better.
