It's That Time of the Year Again

The giveaway is the sound of Hueys in the air.

Just down the road from my place is a forest fire training school.  They train fire fighters who go in on the ground and the helicopter crews who work with them. They've been going at it pretty hard lately judging by the sounds of those Huey rotors.

The Huey rotor has a very distinct sound and, every now and then it reminds me of Apocalypse Now.

  1. .. All my fiction writing includes Hueys some of which are described as 'slicks'. Your post reminds me of Nicholas Evans 'The Smoke Jumper'. I have cousins, off the grid up there in the trees and I worry about them this time of year. They also have cougar, bear and the odd wolverine. This is an unusually disturbing year re fires and the choppers will fly as well as the water bombers.. It's likely to worsen. The crews are going to log a lot of hours !

    1. They are tough indeed, John. At least when no one is shooting holes in them.

  3. 170 fires in BC as of this morning, Sal. CBC is reporting that the smoke has made it to the Fraser Valley. So far the island is just fine.
