A General Cooks His Own Goose

 


Former chief of defence staff, general Jonathan Vance, is neck deep in allegations of inappropriate conduct toward female subordinates. Now, it's alleged, he's gone from the frying pan into the fire.

Vance has been charged with obstruction of justice.

According to the court documents, military police allege that between Feb. 1 and Feb. 3, Vance "did willfully attempt to obstruct the course of justice in a judicial proceeding by repeatedly contacting Mrs K.B. by phone and attempting to persuade her to make false statements about their past relationship to the Canadians Forces National Investigation Service, contrary to section 139(1) of the Criminal Code."

I expect Vance knew the risk he was taking in placing phone calls to a witness in an investigation into his misconduct. Pretty much any communication these days is traceable. This had to have been an act of ultimate desperation.

He's denied having an affair with a subordinate who claims Vance fathered two of her children. The guy has to know he's dead on DNA evidence alone.

The Gun We Point at Our Own Heads

  If you're sitting at a table and there's a loaded pistol in front of you, do you pick it up and point it at your own head?  Probably not, unless something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. How would you feel if someone else was holding that pistol to your head? But there is a pistol pointed at our heads and, unless we do something about it, we're goners. It's not a Glock. It's fossil fuels and the industry is slowly squeezing the trigger. Who Asks "Why?"

Every time there's a conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians, all we hear is 'why?'  Why, as in, whose fault is this? It's easier to affix blame if you can truncate the event. Pick a convenient start date, something recent. In this case we'll make it either the Israeli eviction of Arabs from Jerusalem or the scuffle that took place outside the mosque in response. If those don't work, let's go for Hamas launching unguided rockets into Israel. That's even better because it tags Hamas with the blame. The nice thing about this approach is you can just keep using it. It goes on and on, just as it has for the past half-century since the '67 war.
