Who Appointed This Guy?
A Canadian senator says Canada should stop criticizing China for its persecution of its Uyghur minority.
Independent Senators Group (ISG) Leader Sen. Yuen Pau Woo said Canada should avoid criticizing China for its human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims because our country has mistreated Indigenous peoples.
Echoing an argument made by Chinese officials at the UN last week, Woo said China's policy toward the Muslim minority in Xinjiang province is similar to the colonialism directed at Indigenous peoples in this country, and that condemning the Asian country in harsh terms would be hypocritical and "simply an exercise in labelling."
Woo says the Chinese people are happy with their democracy although it's not clear what this democracy he cites is or where it may be found and between what hours. Senator Woo also seems not to have heard that China is still holding two of our citizens hostage in its prisons.

ReplyDeleteAbsent a real response to modern China, for example, if Apple (and virtually all cell phone producers) were to shift production out of China, I wait for the Chinese Navy to conduct drills in the Salish Sea* before I get worked up.

If Senator Yuen Pau Woo is throwing the indigenous people's file in our face in his latest round of apologetics for his masters in Beijing, it's time to send him packing. We should have had enough of this lobbyist by now.
ReplyDeleteHe knows all about the Two Michaels. His solution is to do as China wants. He advises us to listen to the entreaties of the retired unrepentant Sinophiles of Canadian politics who helped to bring western economies into the web of engagement with the PRC that is helping to kill them now. (These shills have invested their heads; they'll never get them out of China's ass.)
When an issue of Chinese abuse of people or rule-breaking is discussed by our politicians, there's "a fever in Ottawa". When a piece appears in the press that's critical of China, we're reminded that "calling the second-largest and soon to be largest economy in the world a 'threat', the consequences go beyond saying so in an editorial". That's our Senator Woo. That's who.
I think he must have been appointed on the recommendation of Power Corp.
I'm waiting for Trudeau to respond to senator Woo's inexcusable remarks. We're paying this guy and handing him a gold-plated pension?
ReplyDeleteAs an immigrant myself I am quite aware of the possibility of dual allegiances.
ReplyDeletewith that in mind i would suggest that only Canadian born individuals be considered for the higher positions in this land.
The USA has even more of an issue with so many in high places holding dual US, Israeli passports.

Concede that the Americans trumped up the charges against Meng Wenzhou. Concede, as Ivison now argues and as Louise Arbour and Allan Rock have already done, that a hostage swap with China would not be “judicial interference” or a violation of the “rule of law”. Free the hostages and let Huawei get back on its plane. Accept that the hostage taking was successful and acknowledge its legitimacy as a diplomatic tool. Gosh, we could have done this a couple of years ago. Maybe the “new evidence” will save whatever face we still have.

Irrespective of whatever collection of passports he may have in his post-national pockets, he’s a product of a privileged class in the world of post-colonialism; he has no business, for whatever his motives, lecturing the powerless slugs of Canada on the transgressions of our ruling class and economic elites; and we should have no interest in listening to anything more that he might have to say.
Part of my problem with Senator Woo is his conveniently narrow outlook. To him this is a matter of China's abuse of its Uyghur Muslim population. That should be part of our problem with China added to all the other outrages from taking Canadians hostage to illegally conquering Tibet (and ethnically engineering a new Tibetan people) to breaching its promises on Hong Kong and subjugating its population to Beijing's will to its avaricious claims to the South China Sea to its constant efforts to intimidate Taiwan, it goes on and on and on. China has chosen to make itself a regional and global menace. Ignoring that would be beyond foolish.
