How Is This Even Possible?

 


The morning update from Angus Reid seemed so predictable. Erin O'Toole's decision to defy party delegates and accept that climate change is real is causing a stir, even if it is only a ripple on a swill bucket.

Some Tories won't abide any sort of carbon pricing. Nothing new there. Some respondents say the shift would make them a bit more willing to consider the Conservatives in the next election. Yawn.

The jolt came with the numbers. Just one in three Tory voters say climate change is real and man made. 43 per cent say it's just a natural cycle.  17 per cent say it's not happening at all.

That's a lot of seriously misinformed people, folks who do turn out to vote. 60 per cent maintain it's either a hoax or it's natural ("the climate is always changing") and is not man made, meaning there's no need for measures to slash Canada's greenhouse gas emissions. And I thought the Morlocks were all in the States.

I expect the other parties, Greens excepted, also have some contingent who don't buy the business about anthropogenic global warming. From what I've read it seems the anti-vaxxer movement began as leftwing lunacy. I've run into a few conspiracy theorists who claim they're not political at all. They just believe that con trails are chemtrails and they're not budging. That's fringe thinking and that is a natural cycle. 

However, when 60 per cent of Conservative supporters have lost their minds, we may have a serious problem. We've seen what's happened south of the line, how completely a mass of people, voters, can swallow any sort of horse shit. We knew that belief-based fantasists were getting a toe hold here but 60 per cent?

Who Asks "Why?"

Every time there's a conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians, all we hear is 'why?'  Why, as in, whose fault is this? It's easier to affix blame if you can truncate the event. Pick a convenient start date, something recent. In this case we'll make it either the Israeli eviction of Arabs from Jerusalem or the scuffle that took place outside the mosque in response. If those don't work, let's go for Hamas launching unguided rockets into Israel. That's even better because it tags Hamas with the blame.
