Some Choice: Half-Baked or Quarter-Baked

Poor Erin O'Toole. Having to come up with a carbon cut policy when the very idea is deeply unpopular with his party faithful. So, what was Captain Bland to do? At the end of the day he took the Liberals half-baked carbon tax proposal and pared it back. A quarter-baked carbon cut proposal. Scheer Genius.

If the Coronavirus pandemic has taught us anything it's that political solutions to medical/scientific problems don 't work. Trudeau's carbon tax is spawned in politics and O'Toole's is just Trudeau-Lite.

Great day to unveil this stroke/infarction of Conservative genius. Wonderful timing. The same day as a  report accuses the Trudeau government of doling out $18 billion a year in fossil fuel subsidies

A new report concludes that the federal government dropped close to $18 billion in subsidies and other forms of financial support on the fossil fuel industry last year — despite the federal Liberals' stated desire to move the country to a post-carbon economy.

"It's the opposite of the polluter-pays principle, and we're paying for polluters," said Julia Levin, climate and energy program manager with Environmental Defence, which produced the report. "And that's entirely at odds with where our allies are going and not responsible to the Canadian public."

18 billion. That's way more than the 1.8 billion the Trudeau government acknowledges it forks over each year. Then again, 18 billion is way less than the International Monetary Fund estimate of 60 billion or about $1,600 for every Canadian, every year.

Watching Erin O'Toole and Justin Trudeau perform this shadow dance ankle-deep in political horse shit is a bit nauseating.

In other greenhouse gas news, the Trudeau government scores a fullsome F for its promise to cut methane emissions in the oil and gas fields. Even Environment Canada can't keep a straight face on that one, reporting that actual emissions are at least double the estimates the government dishes out for public consumption.

  1. Any indication that the recent winner of the popular vote party might finally embrace climate reality is good news. Albeit very trivial in the scheme of things.

But coming on the heels of the grassroots clear choice for climate denialism, I'd say O'fool has likely guaranteed a third Trudeau gov't.

    1. I'm with you, NPoV. The next election is Trudeau's to lose. The Tories are a mess. Who knows, maybe Harper will try for a comeback.
