Erin O'Toole's Dark Farce


Oh, now the Conservatives are getting worried about Canada's relationship with the United States. Four years of getting bullied and smeared by Trump, that was apparently okay. Biden, oh, there's a threat.

The ToolMeister is vexed by two issues - the Buy American initiative proposed by Biden and the idea that the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline could be closed. Such is the fate of a minority government when the opposition harriers are loosed upon them.

There's still talk of an early election which, if it worked, might give the Liberals a majority and shift Erin O'Toole's gears but Justin Trudeau's bungling handling of the vaccine rollout hasn't been well received. The Libs are up in the polls by 5.5 points but that won't necessarily translate into a majority on election day.

CBC reports that a party ahead in the polls by 9 points a month or two before voting day has a solid chance of scoring a majority win.

A 5.5 point lead with O'Toole, successor to that Scheer guy, at the Tory helm is worrisome. If the Cons are that close with such weak leadership, the Liberals can't afford to take any more hits before Canadians head to the polls.

It was reported in The Tyee yesterday that, in a review of 98 nations' handling of the pandemic, Canada scored a dismal 61st place.  The rankings were based on six factors: confirmed cases, confirmed deaths, confirmed cases per million people, confirmed cases as a proportion of tests and tests per thousand people.

It's fair to say that Canada's shortcomings aren't all federal failures. The premiers have done more than their share to mess things up. However most of the premiers aren't facing the wrath of voters any time soon.

Who Asks "Why?"

Every time there's a conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians, all we hear is 'why?'  Why, as in, whose fault is this? It's easier to affix blame if you can truncate the event. Pick a convenient start date, something recent. In this case we'll make it either the Israeli eviction of Arabs from Jerusalem or the scuffle that took place outside the mosque in response. If those don't work, let's go for Hamas launching unguided rockets into Israel. That's even better because it tags Hamas with the blame.
