I watched the video earlier today, Mound. The only part I didn't like was his assertion that democracy would emerge stronger after this, like the tempered steel of the sword he brandished. I'm not sure there is much basis for that optimism.
I agree, Lorne. Then again what was the alternative? He could hardly say "we're so screwed."
I was talking to my buddy in Michigan today. I always figured when the sky fell in he would be the one who would rise up from the ashes, shake the dust off and go back to business. I knew a few Vietnam vets but Bob was the one least affected by it. That's why I was surprised to hear the sadness in his voice today. It was as though someone took the starch right out of him. For once he's confused, uncertain and very worried.
Old School Republicans agree, TB. They've been pretty outspoken about the need to set fire to the GOP, burn it to the ground, and rebuild a new conservative party.
is it not amazing that republicans are now berating Trump? This is long after they benefited from his tax breaks for the rich. Where the hell were they 12 or more months back?
You have to go back at least to the first inauguration of Barack Obama, TB. That's when Mitch and Co. decided it was their paramount duty to derail the ordinary functioning of American government, throwing both the country and the American people under their bus. Trump is the culmination, logical and foreseeable, of their perfidy.

I cannot forget the moment, I found it quite bizarre. McConnell has been more disruptive than Trump. McConnell's sentiments and influence! were on display in Trumps words and the failed coup. The governmental cowards have now to decide what direction they will take. Bait and switch politics has it consequences, no matter where you are,

Every time there's a conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians, all we hear is 'why?' Why, as in, whose fault is this? It's easier to affix blame if you can truncate the event. Pick a convenient start date, something recent. In this case we'll make it either the Israeli eviction of Arabs from Jerusalem or the scuffle that took place outside the mosque in response. If those don't work, let's go for Hamas launching unguided rockets into Israel. That's even better because it tags Hamas with the blame. The nice thing about this approach is you can just keep using it. It goes on and on, just as it has for the past half-century since the '67 war. You can even date this whole mess to the beginning of the occupation of the Palestinian territories. The Israelis are said to have called these periodic wars, "mowing the lawn." The idea is that, every now and then, you have to take these Arabs to the woodshed. And then you keep your powder dry unt...
There is a group of people I think of as the Cognoscenti, people who are well educated, very informed and of rapidly diminishing relevance. Their ranks include writers such as Chris Hedges and Glen Greenwald. These are people who have honed an almost Puritanical value system, readily finding fault in any direction. They are scathing in their attacks on Republicans and Democrats alike to the point where they become nihilists. They don't endorse. They prescribe. This is where they fail. They're unable to advocate for anything that might resonate with the public whose interests they argue are being trammeled. Donald Trump was bad but Joe Biden is scarcely better. This is where their elitism comes in. 74 million may have voted for Trump but, hey, they didn't know any better. The mob that stormed the Capitol. They were just victims of the system venting their frustrations. All the racism, bigotry, xenophobia, misogyny, white nationalism - inevitable side effects of their oppr...
Doug Ford needs to go - now . Washington Post columnist and Ottawa U. professor, David Moscrop makes a compelling argument for an immediate change in provincial leadership. As Ontario Premier Doug Ford sat down at a Friday afternoon news conference to announce his plans to extend the province’s covid-19 measures, social media feeds erupted with posts from around the province, from around the country, uniformly expressing outrage, frustration, shock and despondence. Ford opened by blaming the federal government for not providing the province with sufficient vaccine supply, abdicating his responsibility for a pandemic that was never going to be solved immediately by vaccines. He moved on to the absurd claim that Ontario has the toughest measures in North America, which is untrue. He said he was restricting outdoor gatherings ( which tend to be far safer than indoor gatherings ) while permitting factories, food-processing plants and warehouses to operate, intimating that a se...

Not a fan but well done.
ReplyDeleteI'll be back!
ReplyDeleteO no you won't.
A rotten building has to torn down and replaced.
Repairing it in the same fashion is pointless.
