Senate and House Recess as Trump Mob Breaks In to Capitol Building. Romney Accuses Trump of Inciting "Insurrection." Dems Projected to Take Both Georgia Senate Seats.

This morning, outside the White House, Donald Trump inflamed his gathered supporters with outright lies and tall tales about how the election was stolen by the Democrats; by weak and dishonest Republicans; by a disloyal Supreme Court, three of whose justices owed their jobs to him. Since then he has slammed his vice-president, Mike Pence, who released a statement saying that he was not going to toss the Electoral College results.

Trump's theme was that everyone betrayed him - the courts, the Democrats, the Republicans, the media enemies of the state - and the election was a scam.

Trump said "we're not going to let that happen," referring to the inauguration of Joe Biden who, according to Trump, lost the election by millions of votes.  He said he will not be conceding the election. It's hard to imagine Trump attending Biden's inauguration ceremony.

Without using the "I" word, Trump suggested an insurgency. He called on his supporters to march down Pennsylvania Avenue to Capitol Hill. Trump stopped short of calling for violence. Trump's mob gathered at the steps of the Capitol building and it wasn't long before they took down the barricades and stormed up the steps, causing Capitol police to retreat behind the massive bronze doors. Meanwhile a few dozen got inside through the back entry.

As he joined the senators and representatives being ushered out of the building, Mitt Romney took a reporter aside to say: “This is what the president has caused today, this insurrection.”

The situation has reached the point that the mayor of D.C. has declared a curfew from 6 p.m. this evening to 6 o'clock tomorrow morning. No one knows when the Senate and House may resume their deliberations. The Proud Boys are expected to ignore the curfew and take to Washington streets tonight.

The Army has mobilized the entire Washington, D.C. national guard. The 1,100 strong D.C. guard will be backed up by Virginia guardsmen and state police sent by their governor.

Joe Biden finally spoke up to say that American democracy is under unprecedented assault. Biden, like Romney, called the mob an "insurrection," and demanded that Trump call off the very people he incited to do this.

Several US media outlets are calling both Georgia runoff elections for the Dems. That would create a tie in the Senate with vice-president Kamala Harris holding the tie-breaker vote. Mitch would lose the GOP whip hand in the Senate and the unilateral ability to block Democratic bills.

  1. Brooks Brother Riots (TM) are much more effective.

I guess its 'fun, fun, fun, 'til Biden takes the White House away'.

    1. Now that Trump has all but declared Pence an "enemy of the people" it's time for Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump from office. He'll have all the votes he needs in the Senate to confirm him if, given the proximity of Biden's inauguration, it even gets that far.

  2. This , like every other thing Donnie has ever done, is failing. As the proud boys try to slink off without being arrested , the militia movement will see it's reputation tarnished.

  3. Before the demonstration the proud boys announced that they would attend 'incognito!
Like trump they play both ends against the middle.
The proud boys, like Trump, will never be held accountable.

  4. Don't hold your breath for anything solid to come out of this insurrection. When will all of the invaders be arrested, when will the sycophantic enablers be sanctioned, when will Biden assert authority and many other questions to be answered.

The Democrats will still fail by 'playing nice' there has to be an institutional purge of niceness and the quisling repuglicans have to unseated.

Democrats have to understand 'nice guys don't win'!

    1. I share your views on this, Ben. It's a bit dispiriting, in part because of the message it conveys to the reprobates.

  5. Agree with Ben:
"Democrats have to understand 'nice guys don't win'!"

It is too bad Viktor Yanukovych didn't know this when our 'color revolution' was busy taking him down in 2014.

Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.
Hence my ongoing respect for Chavez/Maduro.

"What’s the difference between the violent mobs in the Maidan in Kiyv in 2014 and in the Mall in Washington in 2021, other than the language in which curses were being hurled and the colour of the flags? It was the same witches’ brew of demagoguery, right-wing ideology and misinformation that summoned them up. "

    2. More fun from twitter ...

“Due to travel restrictions, this year the United States had to organize the coup at home.”

"Democrats finally found a right wing coup they don't support." (CDN Libs = same)

    1. The Repugs are going to get lengths to pretend that they've mended their ways, Owen. There was a lot of Kumbaya talk spewing from them last evening. But in this morning's NYT or WaPo there's an account of a Republican National Committee meeting this morning at which Trump made a telephone address. It's reported that Trump was greeted with warm applause and someone yelled "We love you." Apparently the president made no mention of the riot or the pandemic.

  8. The final comment on this from me, has everyone seen the clip showing braunnoser supreme Lindsay Graham doing his mea culpa on the Senate floor? Almost threw up my breakfast just watching it, same as Kevin McCarthy asking Congress to come together. Where do they get these revolting hypocrites?
