The Flight from Reality - Nikiforuk

The Tyee's Andrew Nikiforuk writes that we're being left to our fates as province by province lifts Covid-19 restrictions.

Like most modern politicians, [Boris] Johnson couldn’t be bothered with dealing with the complications of an evolving virus that comes in controllable waves.

So he lifted all protections including masks and told his people to move on and live with a nasty novel virus — a policy that favours the rich, dooms the poor and makes a mockery of reality.

Here’s what that kind of “freedom” from COVID actually looks like — because it is coming to a province near you. Canada, too, is in political retreat from reality, feeding and strengthening a sixth wave of COVID propelled by the highly infectious variant: BA.2.

Since Johnson’s gleeful declaration of freedom last year more than 35,000 U.K. citizens have died. Last week alone more than 1,000 people there perished from a pandemic that most Conservative politicians officially pretend is over. One in 13 people are now infected.

As proof, Nikiforuk cites three examples - the UK, Denmark and South Korea - where restrictions were lifted and the pandemic returned. Then he turned to Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan’s Premier Scott Moe, another denier of reality, declared the pandemic over three months ago. Since getting rid of indoor masking and other precautions, more than 256 citizens of his province have died. That’s one-fifth of Saskatchewan’s total COVID deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney also ignored the science, capitulated to the anti-maskers and removed all protections. In the last three months, 700 Albertans have died while thousands more will likely come down with Long COVID. Across Canada, 7,000 have died from COVID over the same period. For context, Canada’s 2018-19 flu season — before the pandemic — killed 224 people a year.
The grim facts above all speak to the evils of political expediency. What we need now are leaders who understand exponential growth, viral evolution and the physics of masking and ventilation. Science (but not pollsters) will tell you that viral evolution likely leads to new variants with unpredictable severity and better abilities to evade vaccine or natural immunity.

Depending on who is counting, Canada is now in the fifth or sixth wave of Covid-19 with the highly infectious BA.2 variant taking the crown from Omicron. We have seen what happens when premiers like Alberta's Kenney sound the "all clear" prematurely.

  1. I'm tired of the fear mongering. Omicron v1 and v2 are not preventable, this restrictions business has hurt enough people,it's fucking over, deal with it, and move on. Seek help for hypochondria. It's time to get our lives back.

    1. Not a trucker, just working class person, instead of a member of the professional managerial class, most of who we're perfectly fine with restrictions because they could work from home while the poor's lives we're absolutely wrecked.

    2. If wearing a mask indoors is too much of a sacrifice then we're in a pretty dismal situation.

  3. Just over a week ago we were suckered into attending a 'back to normal' concert at a pub/club.
The end result is my , three vaccine, wife caught Covid , was very ill and my cancer operation was cancelled this morning out of caution.
If that's getting my life back I will have to re think wtf life is!

    1. Jeebus, TB. I'm sorry to hear this. I do hope your wife is recovering. I understand your frustration. May the delay be brief. Best wishes for you both.

  4. Here in Ontario, where an election is fast-approaching, Doug Ford has taken a leaf out of the page of his freedom-loving fellow travellers. When asked if he would consider re-imposing restrictions if numbers warranted, he said no. All of us, he intoned, can make informed decisions on our own.

    1. Hey, Lorne. It is, as Nikiforuk notes, a policy that favours the rich and dooms the poor. The rich can much better afford to make "informed decisions."

  6. We are slowly but surely mimicking the attitudes of those that rose to power and influence during the industrial revolution where workers were little but cattle to be herded and coerced into self destructive situations.
The big difference is that nowadays the bosses are bigger and are about to control governments.
    Yet we love them!!

  7. Every province has implemented no restrictions. Those Chief Public Health Officers in all provinces who have Zoom calls with each other each week agreed to letting Omicron run wild. It's not just Alberta, Sask and Ontario. We all have to "learn to live with Covid", we're told.

Now, who orchestrated this utter denialist BS? That's what I want to know. Dr Lisa Barrett, Infectious Diseases Specialist from Dalhousie University, ran our pop-up and mobile test clinic program in conjunction with Public Health here in Nova Scotia this past Spring, Summer and Fall. She's often been featured on network TV. We had 100 deaths up to Dec/21, and now we're over 300. Tripled in three and a half months. So what do we do? Abandon restrictions. The mind boggles.

Now, Barrett herself went down with Omicron three weeks ago, and looking a bit worse for wear, has since re-appeared urging people to be extremely careful and wear your mask.. Today on CBC Radio, she was not happy about the lack of testing, the ridiculously high positivity rate, and the absolutely lousy and undetailed statistics being offered. So I'd guess her partnership with NS Public Health is over, judging by her remarks. Not just her, but a lot of doctors are now popping up wondering what in hell is going on. Surgeries cancelled starting today in Halifax -- no damn staff, they're all off isolating in vast numbers! All we had to do is to keep wearing masks, but oh no, the vast uneducated like Gyor and crazy truckers run our county's public health policy, apparently.

I've been in personal lockdown for weeks, because I believe Barrett who was on about this nonsense well before she got sick, And ask again -- who in hell made all these provincial Public Health Officers sing from the same songsheet and abandon their duty to the citizenry? Science-based policy? Nowhere to be found. You're on your own and the best of luck.

It doesn't take much research to discover the UK, Denmark and Germany have horrendous Covid problems on their hands, both hospitalizations and deaths, and nobody officially gives a shit. The same is happening here. Why? Does anyone know?

    1. This is no longer a public health crisis, Bill. It's a political issue and that ensures a political approach. We've had ample experience to know how this rollercoaster plays out. What we need to prepare for isn't so much Omicron or this BA.2 but the next variant and those that may follow it.

How many of us realize how many variants this virus has already spawned? More than we imagine and there's word of more on the way. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/variant-classifications.html
