Macron - By a Nose

The G&M has pronounced Emmanuel Macron re-elected president of France.

French President Emmanuel Macron defeated his far-right rival Marine Le Pen on Sunday by a comfortable margin, early projections by pollsters showed, securing a second term and heading off what would have been a political earthquake.

The first projections showed Macron securing around 57 to 58 per cent of the vote. Such estimates are normally accurate but may be fine-tuned as official results come in from around the country.

Victory for the centrist, pro-European Union Macron would be hailed by allies as a reprieve for mainstream politics that have been rocked in recent years by Britain’s exit from the European Union, the 2016 election of Donald Trump and the rise of a new generation of nationalist leaders.

Comments

  1. Macron appears to have won convincingly, Mound. But a vote of nearly 42% for LePen is still troubling.

  2. Not a big choice here. You were either far-right, or you voted for Macron, not necessarily a ringing endorsement of the man.

  3. Won by a nose!
    Must have a big nose.
Was a low turnout to a lack lustre election; where have we seen that before?
The world is ruled by the best government money can buy or nationalistic near dictatorships .
Wonder why the masses turn to social media?
Social media is about as believable as many of those we elect plus the ones doing the electing have no idea of the realities of the world just their wants!

  4. This French election runoff apparently had the lowest turnout ever.
And an exit poll said that 91% of Macron's votes were to stop Le Pen.
Only 9% voted for Macron as their best choice for President.

International loan sharks backed by the guns
    Of market hungry military profiteers

  5. "One way that Macron’s victory is Pyrrhic is that he has taken over Islamophobia as a plank in his platform, trying to outflank Le Pen. He has been part of a move to dismantle basic civil liberties in France. He wants to break the heavily unionized French labor movement. He isn’t very good on environmental or green issues."

  6. Off Topic:
Abstract | Green water — terrestrial precipitation, evaporation and soil moisture — is fundamental to Earth system dynamics and is now extensively perturbed by human pressures at continental to planetary scales. However, green water lacks explicit consideration in the existing planetary boundaries framework that demarcates a global safe operating space for humanity. In this Perspective, we propose a green water planetary boundary and estimate its current status. The green water planetary boundary can be represented by the percentage of ice- free land area on which root- zone soil moisture deviates from Holocene variability for any month of the year. Provisional estimates of departures from Holocene- like conditions, alongside evidence of widespread deterioration in Earth system functioning, indicate that the green water planetary boundary is already transgressed. Moving forward, research needs to address and account for the role of root- zone soil moisture for Earth system resilience in view of ecohydrological, hydroclimatic and sociohydrological interactions
