On the Road to Glasgow

 

COP26, the 26th attempt to get the community of nations to do something effective about the climate crisis, opens in about six weeks in Glasgow.  There will be no end of hot air about carbon emissions cuts, carbon neutrality and "carbon zero." Expect a lot of "this time for sure."

It's telling how narrowly the debate has been framed. It's all about emissions, man-made emissions.  We won't discuss man-made emissions in the context of the natural emissions, tipping points, we have triggered over the last two decades. And we definitely won't waste breath talking about existing GHG emissions and the impacts already baked in.

Canadians think of the climate emergency in a national sense. What's it mean to me? We don't waste much time pondering what's going on elsewhere, like just next door in the land of Uncle Sam. Next door. Now.


Over the next few weeks I'll be posting more about the climate emergency we're not talking about and what's in store.

      It's a great unasked question. Does El Norte open its borders or does it do whatever it must to repel migrants? Gwynne Dyer told us, in his 2008 book "Climate Wars' that the Pentagon has plans to seal the southern border.

      The US military is alive to the problem of optics. It fears nightly news reports of their young men and women gunning down refugees would trigger civil unrest at home. That has led them to consider robotic gun turrets in "free fire" zones.

      There's also a movie, I think from the 80s, that might still be available on YouTube about a similar EU response to a mass migration out of Africa. An armada departs Libya and reaches the coast of Spain. The EU attempts to negotiate their return to Africa but the migrants refuse to go back. It ends with an aerial scene revealing tanks, armoured vehicles and brigades of soldiers deployed a block away, out of sight.

      Since some began taking climate change seriously we have gone from 'we must arrest emissions lest we pass a "never exceed' point and trigger runaway climate change from natural feedback mechanisms' to eliminating the natural feedback factor entirely. Nobody wants to talk about what's already underway yet no one wants to tie actual or predicted results to changes in man-made climate change either.

      This is why I called our response and that of other nations merely "gestural." Measures aren't tied or even linked to discernable outcomes. That's a hell of an approach to policy and planning, eh?

The Cognoscenti Syndrome

  There is a group of people I think of as the Cognoscenti, people who are well educated, very informed and of rapidly diminishing relevance. Their ranks include writers such as Chris Hedges and Glen Greenwald. These are people who have honed an almost Puritanical value system, readily finding fault in any direction. They are scathing in their attacks on Republicans and Democrats alike to the point where they become nihilists. They don't endorse. They prescribe. This is where they fail.
