Justin Made His Bed. Let Him Lie in It.

"A vote for the NDP is a vote for Erin O'Toole." It's the standard Liberal refrain. If you don't vote Liberal, we'll shoot this dog.

A vote for the NDP is just that, a vote for the New Democratic Party's candidate in your riding. Nothing more. Nothing less.  The Liberal ploy is an unprincipled effort to rig the vote. It's like the old days when votes were sometimes bought for coins or liquor only today they use guilt and fear.

Justin Trudeau knew how First Past the Post was corrosive to democracy. He promised to end the days of "false majority" government - that is until he won a false majority after which he declared his solemn promise null and void because - well, just because.

Back in 2015, Justin vowed that Canada would never again have to endure the ordeal of another Harper-style false majority government. Yet he's gunning for exactly that in chosing to send Canadians back to the polls for no other discernable reason than a chance to reclaim a false majority in 2021.  In the midst of another wave of the pandemic no less.

Now that Trudeau's gambit is predictably blowing up in his face, it's time to lay on the guilt and fear. Maybe, just maybe, there's still time to wring out another minority government and proclaim that the voters have given a clear mandate to do whatever the fuck you like.

This election is not an exercise of democracy. It's an exercise in thwarting democracy yet again. That's the "Liberal Way."

Enough. Ignore the coercion. Put Canada first this time. Vote for whatever candidate you prefer. Send Justin's strategic voting handmaidens packing.  If O'Toole wins, that's because his party took the most seats. So be it.

And, when the promises come flying, remember:

  1. A very timely post, Mound. I've been reading on Twitter today the fraught declamations that a vote for the NDP is a vote for the Conservatives. I'm well past my days of strategic voting, and I deeply resent those who warn that the sky will fall unless we vote Liberal. Tales to frighten children is how I regard them. And your indictment of Trudeau in this entire mess is spot-on.

BTW, I remember that National Lampoon cover. In fact, I recall buying the issue.

    1. No one has had the strategic voting pummeling like the Greens, Lorne. Liberals and New Dems alike have played that card shamelessly. It's a fine way to disenfranchise a lot of voters.

Go back to 1974. Trudeau Sr. used Stanfield's campaign promise to implement wage and price controls against the NDP. PET would get on stage and say "Zap, you're frozen." The labour vote defected from the NDP and flocked to the Libs, their supposed savior. Trudeau got a majority and, barely a month later, repaid labour by implementing wage and price controls. Talk about the scorpion and the frog.

    1. So long as it's not another false majority, I'll live with it, Lungta.

  3. In May 2015, Notley's breakthrough was an early indicator of the big national upset that followed in October of that year.
    .
The recent Nova Scotia provincial upset, may well be the harbinger of 2021.
(A more prudent PM would have waited just 3 days and had second thoughts, but not Jr.)

  4. .. Perhaps I'll discover a secret cache within myself to have faith in complete strangers that I will never meet but our social 'bubbles' may interlock

The so called 'Economy' is being cracked open like an oyster for the nth time and as most of my family is in Alberta & BC, I pay close attention to those provinces.

But I have a first grandchild that I have seen exactly once. We viewed the royal princeling on the front porch of my son's home. Us full mask. I also visited my big sister for dinner & must say that again I don't know what other 'bubbles' she, her hubby and misc have been interacting with. I saw my family doc and his protocol is rock solid & I trust him & his receptionist, a semi retired RN implicitly

My lovely partner works with an iconic musician who is a walking candidate for a COVID crash & burn & die and neither of my partner or I care to kill off such a legend .. So our bubble(s) remains super tight

We are a long long way from resolving this COVID Conundrum - Almost two years in and we are still learning the Science & watching aghast that feed stores and tractor supply stores can't keep large animal agricultural Ivermectin on the shelves.. It flies off the shelves !

What should I think about a complete stranger who really should be double vaccined, getting a free pass - say someone who drives a school bus, or is stocking grocery shelves, or they're a police officers, a hospital orderly, a butcher, a baker in a small retail outlet

I pull my personal bubble tighter & watch & learn

I should listen to Doug Ford or listen to Dr Larry Brilliant from the team that slayed Smallpox in India ?

  5. I largely agree with you - I have to hold me nose with an industrial clamp - but I wish I could be so cavalier and certain of my God ordained voting principles to dismiss strategic voting like the odorous skunk at the party you think it is and thus invite Texas theocratic into the wombs of Canadian woman.

    Oh, what's that?

    It can't happen here?

I know you're smarter than that. It can. And you will be to blame.

  6. Well, I guess that's a mic drop, you ideologues. No response.
You know the Cons will empower the Trumpistans among us to bring us to the Turkish, US, Brazilian, brink.

Or you don't... in which case I feel sorry for you and the delusions of 1955 Canada you are under.

    Wake up FFS.
