How Many Like This Lurk Among Us

He drove his truck into a family, this family, targeting them because of their garments.

He killed four of the five, a  76 year old woman, a 44 year old man, a 42 year old woman and a 15 year old girl.  A 9 year old boy was struck but is expected to survive.

This happened in Canada, in Ontario, in London.

The driver, 20 year old Nathaniel Veltman fled the scene but was later arrested. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest.

The cops say Veltman targeted the family because of their Islamic faith.

From 2015 to 2019, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) tracked more than 300 incidents, including more than 30 acts of physical violence. These include a gun attack on the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec on 29 January 2017, which left six dead and 19 injured in one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canada’s recent history.

Mustafa Farooq, CEO of NCCM, said he was “numb” when he heard the news. He said the family was known as longstanding and “loving members of the Muslim community” in London.

“This is a terrorist attack on Canadian soil, and should be treated as such,” he said. “This has had a chilling effect on the community. Something has to change to end the violence against Muslims in Canada.”

Who is indoctrinating these people? Hey, it doesn't happen overnight that a person becomes so enraged they're prepared to commit mass murder. He has to be carrying a vicious malevolence within himself, a feral hatred.

This is nothing less than domestic terrorism. We've got to smoke these bastards out. We've seen from the States how this spreads.

  2. I think that stuff will be evidence at his trial, if there is one. The authorities have some protocol for seizure of his computer, tablet and smart phone. The notion that he acted alone seems farfetched. He was just cruising down the street in his pickup, sporting a bulletproof vest, when along came this family that he spontaneously decided to run over. No, I'll bet he had accomplices who at the very least incited this crime.

  3. Trust:

Trust your society so that you can walk down the street in peace.

Trust your fellow citizens that you can safely board a plane.

Trust your modern leaders to make science-based, long-view decisions that will protect our habitats.

Trust your media to curate a balanced, empirical perspective.

    Broken Trust:
When the objects and practices of our everyday life have been weaponized against us we are circling the wagons and shooting inward.

  4. The graves in Kamloops are tragic but from the past.
The death of this family defies description.
We are all part of this; how do we stop it?

    1. Well, TB, I think we need to step up our domestic counter-terrorism effort. Was this guy connected? What and who poisoned his mind? What was he reading? Who was getting to him? In sentencing we already have a firearms surcharge. Treat terrorism as seriously as we do using a gun in the commission of an offence.

Was he insane? Was he brainwashed. We really need to pick this guy apart, especially to see if he might be part of something larger.
