The End of the Line For the Cavendish Cottager

A dark day on Friendly Lane, Prince Edward Island, as the Supreme Court of Canada ends Mike Duffy's quest for redress against the Senate and RCMP.

Duffy was seeking $7.8 million in reimbursement and damages from the Senate, the RCMP and the federal government in relation to his November 2013 suspension from the Red Chamber. Duffy's lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon, has previously said the RCMP lawsuit would proceed despite the challenges facing the Senate legal action.

Duffy's claims were previously bounced out of the Ontario Superior Court and Court of Appeal on the basis of Parliamentary privilege.

Suing the Senate always seemed an uphill fight. Some of Duffy's legal team thought he should have sued Nigel Wright, Steven Harper, Bob Paulson, David Tkachuk, Carolyn Stewart-Olsen and others personally.  The idea was that they were acting outside the authority of their respective offices and, hence, were not protected by any sovereign immunity.

I'd send a dollar to a crowdfunding effort on this!

    1. We were sure there was no chance he'd succeed against the Senate. Duffy went for it anyway. At MD's age and health I would be surprised this business didn't end today.
